Bishop Barron to Speak at CUA Commencement
The Catholic University of America (CUA) has announced that Bishop Robert Barron of Winona-Rochester, Minnesota, will be the speaker for its 2025 commencement ceremony. Bishop Barron is an alumnus of CUA, having received his master’s degree in philosophy from the university in 1982.
Honorary Degrees Awarded
Bishop Barron will receive an honorary degree during the ceremony. Five other notable individuals will also be awarded honorary degrees:
- U.S. Representative Christopher Smith
- Former March for Life president Jeanne Mancini
- Archbishop Vicken Aykazian of the Eastern Diocese of the Armenian Church of America
- Monsignor John Enzler, former president of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Washington
- Steven Muncy, CUA alumnus and founder of the nonprofit Community and Family Services International
University Praise and Barron’s Response
CUA President Peter Kilpatrick praised Bishop Barron’s extensive work in education and evangelism, particularly through his media apostolate Word on Fire and various digital platforms. Kilpatrick stated that Barron’s engagement with modern culture while upholding Catholic tradition aligns with the university’s educational goals and will inspire graduates.
Bishop Barron expressed his gratitude and honor at being invited to return to his alma mater for the address.
Commencement Details
The commencement ceremony is set to take place on May 17, 2025, at 10 a.m. ET on the university’s campus in Washington, D.C. It is anticipated that approximately 1,300 degrees will be awarded to graduate and undergraduate students.
